As the internet opens up to wider audiences, there's little doubt that more and more fiction writers are finding their home online. The web is also a great place for inspiration and interaction… which can sometimes lead to writers taking on multiple projects and ultimately having character population explosions. This site was designed to help Authors organize information about their worlds and characters in an easy-to-use format. It also allows writers to easily create online pages that can be shared as a reference with friends and fellow Authors on the net.

Writers of all genres are invited to join!

We only ask that you respect fellow Authors and their creative properties and that you do not post suggestive, graphic or adult material here.

What is a Figment?

Figment (/ˈfɪgmənt/ [fig-muhnt]) , n. [L. figmentum, fr. fingere to form, shape, invent, feign.]
An invention; a fiction; something feigned or imagined: just a figment of the imagination.

At least, that's what the dictionary would have you believe.

Figment Redefined!

In the writer's heart, there are characters… then there are characters. Characters that become more than just another plot device or collection of random biographical data. Characters who endure the test of time, survive the rising action and extend beyond the happy (or not so happy) ending. These are characters that remain with their Authors for years, even decades. They develop and grow, sometimes slowly… sometimes unobserved. And they become a part of that Author's life.

This kind of character has become a Figment — a living fragment of ourselves that plays out across the page. Figments develop minds of their own, complete with hopes and fears… likes and dislikes… and very often they let the Author know exactly what he/she intends to do about that!

If you're anything like me, you have far too many figments to keep track of. That's what the Sygnus Figment Registry is here to help writers do!
